In the run-up to the UK general election, expected one month from now, the Conservative Government's Indian-origin Home Secretary, Priti Patel, has vowed to introduce an NHS visa.
This visa will be part of the points-based system that the Conservative party intends to adopt if it is voted back to power, similar to the points-based system used by Australia. The NHS visa will be part of the points-based immigration system (PBIS) that the party intends to introduce if it is voted back.
The Home Secretary has said the visa will cut both the fees and the processing time for doctors and nurses. This visa is part of the plan to introduce a points-based immigration system that will enable the UK to control the number of foreigners and simultaneously permit fundamental experts, for example, doctors and nurses to migrate to the country.
The UK Prime Minister announced plans for the PBIS when he took office in July this year. It is intended to apply once Britain leaves the EU, after which EU free movement rules will no longer apply.
The proposed NHS visa will cost half the current fee, falling from 928 pounds to 464 pounds. It will have a fast-track process with a guaranteed decision within about two weeks. Applicants ready to work for the NHS will also receive additional points in the PBIS.
The Conservatives won the December 2019 election, and the pledge became the Health and Care Worker visa, launched on 4 August 2020.
